The Zimbabwe national women’s team is looking to consolidate their chances of reaching the COSAFA Women’s Championship semi-finals when they face defending champions Zambia this afternoon.
The Mighty Warriors are currently sitting in second place after opening their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Eswatini on Thursday. Zambia, who are also on three points, lead the group on superior goal difference after beating Botswana 3-0.
The Group B encounter will be played at Seshego Stadium in Polokwane at 3pm CAT. The match will be streamed live on FIFA+ and COSAFA’s YouTube channel, allowing fans across the region to follow the action.
Speaking ahead of the match, Zimbabwe head coach Sithethelewe Sibanda acknowledged Zambia’s pedigree as defending champions but insisted her side will not be intimidated.
She said: “It’s going to be a tough game. They are the defending champions and have been active, but they are not going to get it easy; we will definitely give them competition.”
Zambia assistant coach Charles Haalubono is also cautious ahead of the clash, saying: “We are facing a very tough opponent, Zimbabwe. We know them well as they know us as well so we are having a plan on them. Having played them several times, we know how they move and how they stand; so, we are going to consolidate our tactical plan.”
The winner of today’s encounter will move to six points, open a crucial three-point gap, and take a major step towards securing a semi-final berth.
The top teams in all three groups will advance to the semi-finals, along with the best runner-up. Because there are three teams in Group C, results against the bottom-placed sides in Groups A and B will be disregarded for the purposes of that calculation.
