The Mighty Warriors failed to reach the final of the COSAFA Women’s Championship after suffering a 4–2 defeat on penalties to the South Africa women’s national football team on Friday.
The semi-final clash had ended in a 1–1 stalemate in regulation time, forcing the contest to be decided from the penalty spot.
Zimbabwe opened the scoring in the 10th minute through Ethel Chinyerere’s beautiful long-range strike.
Banyana Banyana equalised in the 39th minute courtesy of Nthabiseng Majiya’s effort.
In the shootout, Banyana Banyana proved more clinical, converting four of their spot-kicks, while the Mighty Warriors managed only two, ultimately seeing their hopes of reaching the final come to an end.
Zimbabwe will now face Zambia women’s national football team in the third/fourth-place play-off on Sunday.
