N’anga, Cellphone Dealer Drown While Conducting Rituals …

By A Correspondent – A ritual ceremony at Clydesdale Dam, Gweru ended in tragedy this week after two men drowned while allegedly performing traditional rites in the water.

The deceased — a traditional healer and a mobile phone dealer — were among 15 people who had gathered at the dam for what participants described as a spiritual exercise meant to seek improved fortunes.

During the proceedings, the two men entered the water but reportedly ran into trouble and disappeared beneath the surface.

A member of the group claimed unusual winds swept across the dam moments before the pair went under.

“It was something I cannot properly explain,” said the eyewitness, who declined to be named. “They were in the water as part of the ritual when a sudden whirlwind formed above the dam. Within seconds, they were gone.”

Despite frantic efforts by those present, the two could not be rescued.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Gweru community, with families and friends struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss.

Zimbabwe Republic Police Midlands provincial spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the drownings.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms two cases of sudden death in which two men drowned at Clydesdale Dam in Gweru on 24 February 2026,” he said.

“The now deceased men met their fate while allegedly carrying out traditional rituals.”
Inspector Mahoko said the group consisted of 10 women and five men who had travelled to the dam for the ceremony. Police officers, including members of the Sub Aqua Unit, attended the scene and recovered the bodies the following day at around 10am.

One of the deceased was identified as Philemon Matavire (46) of Woodlands, Gweru, while the second victim had not yet been formally identified.

Police have urged the public to exercise extreme caution when entering dams, rivers and other deep water bodies, warning against unnecessary risks.

Investigations into the incident are continuing, with authorities indicating that strong currents or underwater conditions may have played a role in the tragedy.
