Amnesty International Demands Immediate Release of Detained Activist Godfrey Karembera
Tinashe Sambiri– Harare – March 3, 2026
Amnesty International Zimbabwe has called on the government to immediately release activist Godfrey Karembera, who has been arbitrarily detained since his arrest on 20 October 2025.
Karembera is facing charges of “incitement to commit public violence” for allegedly distributing fliers ahead of a planned march on 17 October 2025. He has yet to stand trial.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Amnesty International said:
“Godfrey Karembera has been arbitrarily detained for months without trial. This is a clear violation of his human rights.
Authorities must immediately and unconditionally release him and drop the charges against him,” the organisation said.
Amnesty International Zimbabwe highlighted that detaining activists without due process undermines the rule of law and stifles freedom of expression.
“Arresting individuals for peacefully exercising their right to assemble or express opinions is unacceptable.
The government must ensure that justice is fair, transparent, and protective of fundamental freedoms,” the statement added.
The call for Karembera’s release comes amid growing concerns over the treatment of political activists in Zimbabwe, with human rights groups urging authorities to respect constitutional rights and international human rights standards.
Authorities have yet to respond to Amnesty International’s demand.
