The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) will officially launch the new Munhumutapa Cup on Wednesday in Harare, marking the introduction of what is set to become the country’s biggest knockout football tournament.
The launch event will be graced by Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is expected to attend as the guest of honour.
The Munhumutapa Cup will adopt an FA Cup-style format, bringing together all registered teams from ZIFA’s structures — from the Premier Soccer League down to the lower divisions, including clubs from the Area Zones. This inclusive format means teams from the grassroots level will have a chance to compete against top-flight sides in the same competition.
The new tournament will become Zimbabwe’s largest knockout competition, with the winners guaranteed a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Previously, the Confederation Cup slot was secured through the Chibuku Super Cup, a competition that only features top-flight clubs.
The Munhumutapa Cup will also include participation from the women’s league.
The tournament is reportedly valued at US$25 million over a five-year period, with US$5 million set to be injected into the competition each season.
