Police Silent As Chamuka Threatens To Set Chamisa’s Home Ablaze
Tinashe Sambiri – A video circulating widely on social media has sent shockwaves across Zimbabwe’s political landscape after opposition leader Herbert Chamuka publicly threatened to set fire to Advocate Nelson Chamisa’s home.
In the video, Chamuka, leader of the People’s Unity Party, can be heard saying:
“Vana Nelson Chamisa tichapisira dzimba, Biti tichauya ikoko” – a statement that has been widely condemned as incitement to violence.
Chamuka reportedly made the threats over disagreements concerning what he describes as the “Inclusive Government Agenda,” targeting Chamisa and fellow opposition figure Tendai Biti for refusing to participate.
The incident occurred in Gweru last Saturday. Despite public outrage over his comments, authorities have yet to act decisively against Chamuka, raising concerns about law enforcement inaction.
The threats have drawn widespread condemnation from political commentators, civil society groups, and social media users, many of whom described the remarks as reckless and dangerous.
“This kind of rhetoric is unacceptable and puts lives at risk,” said one observer. “Political disagreements should never escalate into threats or intimidation.”
The case continues to spark debate about the need for responsible conduct among political leaders, with many urging the police and party structures to take urgent action to prevent further escalation.
