Outrage as Mexican Journalist Mockingly References Deceased Diogo Jota
Sports Correspondent – Fans have expressed fury after Mexican journalist Edgar Valero of El Heraldo made a controversial mention of the late Diogo Jota in an article about Portugal’s potential squad for a friendly against Mexico.
The article suggested that Portugal might consider Jota’s return, while Cristiano Ronaldo could be absent or limited—a statement that immediately raised alarm, as Jota tragically passed away last year.
Instead of issuing a correction or apology, Valero posted on X:
“Thanks for the likes and retweets. I was planning to interview Jota but he died, f*cking hell. What can we do… Next time I’ll make sure the guy is actually alive.
And I’ll be more alive while writing!”
The comment quickly sparked widespread backlash online, with fans of Portugal and Liverpool demanding disciplinary action or even his dismissal.
Mexican fans and fellow journalists also criticized the tone and insensitivity of the post. Many are now calling for a formal apology from both Valero and El Heraldo, emphasizing accountability in journalism.
