Video Suggest Viral “Sadza Man” Arrested After Alleged Theft of Cellphone Incident – Eduzim News

By Dorrothy Moyo | HARARE / CHINHOYI — Dramatic images have emerged appearing to show Elias Chikwava being bundled into the back of a vehicle by members of the public, following reports that he was caught stealing a mobile phone at a funeral in Chinhoyi.

The undated photographs, now circulating widely on social media, depict a tense and chaotic scene in which Chikwava is seen seated on the metal floor of what appears to be a pickup truck or utility vehicle. He is surrounded by several men, some of whom appear to be confronting him.

In one of the images, Chikwava—wearing a red jacket over a dark T-shirt and jeans—holds what looks like a mobile phone while glancing sideways with a visibly anxious expression. The enclosed canopy and confined setting suggest he is being transported, possibly after being apprehended.

Another image captures a more intense moment: a man crouches close to Chikwava, pointing a finger toward his face in what appears to be a heated confrontation. Chikwava sits low against the side of the vehicle, his posture subdued, as others look on. No restraints are visible, but the body language and positioning indicate he is not free to leave.

The final frame contrasts sharply with the unfolding events. It shows a composed portrait of Chikwava, alongside a smaller inset image believed to be from the now-viral footage that first brought him into the public eye—cooking sadza on the streets of Harare’s Central Business District at night.

Chikwava’s rise to prominence had sparked a wave of goodwill across Zimbabwe and beyond. Social media users reportedly raised more than US$6,500 in donations to support him, while he also received a residential stand in Nyabira and US$1,000 in cash from the CEO of RealtorVille Group.

However, that goodwill has now been overshadowed by allegations that he was caught stealing a phone during a funeral gathering in Chinhoyi. According to reports, mourners apprehended him at the scene, after which he was allegedly assaulted before being handed over to authorities.

The emergence of these images appears to corroborate parts of those accounts, particularly the claim that he was physically detained and transported by members of the public.

The incident has ignited intense debate online. While some Zimbabweans have expressed anger and disappointment, others have raised concerns over the apparent use of mob justice, urging that due process be followed and that allegations be properly investigated in a court of law.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement confirming the arrest or detailing any charges.

As the story continues to unfold, the images serve as a stark visual narrative of a man whose rapid rise to public sympathy has been followed by an equally dramatic fall into controversy.
