Senegal reveals next move after being stripped of AFCON title

Senegal have revealed their next move after being stripped of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

The Teranga Lions were stripped of the title after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeals Board declared that the West African giants breached Article 84 of the Regulations of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The board said Senegal forfeited the final match after their coach, Pape Bouna Thiaw, led a protest against the awarding of a penalty to Morocco in stoppage time of the second half. Thiaw instructed his players to leave the pitch before captain Sadio Mané intervened and asked the team to return.

Morocco’s Ibrahim Díaz eventually took the penalty after a lengthy stoppage, but Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy saved the spot-kick.

Senegal went on to win the match 1–0 in extra time.

Despite match finished, the judgement declared Morocco winners of the final on a 3-0 scoreline.

The Teranga Lions have now confirmed that they will file an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over the decision to strip them of the AFCON title.

The Senegal FA said in a statement: “The Senegalese Football Federation condemns this unjust, unprecedented and unacceptable decision, which brings African football into disrepute.

“To defend its rights and the interests of Senegalese football, the federation will, as soon as possible, file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.”
