FIFA mandates female coaches for all Zimbabwe’s women teams

FIFA has mandated that all teams participating in its women’s tournaments must have at least one female head coach or assistant coach.

This “landmark” rule aims to increase female representation, following a 2023 survey in which women held just 5% of technical coaching positions.

Under the new ruling, at least two staff members on the bench for every team during matches must be female, with one serving as either a head coach or assistant coach.

The mandate applies to all youth and senior tournaments, including both club and national teams in Zimbabwe and beyond.

The decision was made at the FIFA Council on Thursday, where long-term strategies to improve female representation in coaching were also discussed.

The directive takes immediate effect, including at the U-17 and U-20 Women’s World Cups, as well as the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup.
