Munetsi, Chirewa and co’s departure affected Wolves, admits Bueno

Wolves defender Hugo Bueno has admitted that the January departures of key players, including Zimbabwean duo Marshall Munetsi and Tawanda Chirewa, left the squad weakened during a crucial phase of the season.

Munetsi completed a loan move to Paris FC in Ligue 1, while academy graduate Chirewa, who had been steadily breaking into the senior team, joined Barnsley FC in EFL League One. Both players moved on loan deals until the end of the season.

Bueno acknowledged that the exits disrupted the team’s balance, with the replacements failing to immediately fill the gap left behind.

“It was a bit difficult for us because we were quite weakened, and I don’t think we brought in what was needed to replace them,” Bueno told Agencia EFE in Spain, as cited by The Express and Star.

The Spaniard, however, emphasised that unity within the squad has helped them remain competitive despite the setbacks, with the team showing signs of improvement in recent performances.

“Despite that, the team is very united, and we’re all pulling together to get through this.

“We know that staying up is very difficult, but we have to take it one game at a time and win every game we can.

“We need to get as many points as possible, and hopefully we can achieve our goal of staying up.”

Wolves have been battling to climb away from the relegation zone, with consistency proving elusive following the mid-season changes to the squad.
