ZANU PF Rolls Out Door-to-door Blitz In Bulawayo To Sell Unpopular Constitutional Amendment Bill…

By A Correspondent – The ZANU PF Bulawayo Province has launched an aggressive door-to-door campaign aimed at promoting the controversial Amendment Bill Number 3, a move critics say is more about political persuasion than genuine public engagement.

Party officials say the initiative is meant to clarify the provisions of the Bill and gather public sentiment.

However, residents and observers have expressed concern that the exercise could amount to undue pressure on communities to accept changes they may not support.

Greens District chairman Tendai Charuka defended the campaign, stating, “We have taken it upon ourselves as ZANU PF Bulawayo Province to go directly to the people, household by household, to explain what Amendment Bill Number 3 entails. We aim to ensure that no one is left behind in understanding the proposed changes.”

Despite these assurances, critics argue that the door-to-door approach risks blurring the line between informing citizens and coercing them into supporting the Bill.

Charuka further added, “As we engage communities, we are also gathering their views and sentiments. This feedback is critical as it helps shape a more inclusive approach to governance and policy implementation.”

The Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Bill of 2026, approved by Cabinet in February, has already sparked controversy. Key proposals include changing the presidential election process from a direct vote to a parliamentary vote, extending presidential terms, and restructuring electoral and constitutional bodies—measures critics warn could centralize power and reduce democratic accountability.

Parliament has scheduled nationwide public hearings from March 30 to April 2. Yet, political analysts question whether residents will feel free to voice opposition given ZANU PF’s intense household campaign.

As the party rolls out its door-to-door blitz across Bulawayo, concerns grow over whether this initiative is a genuine consultation or a calculated push to sell an unpopular constitutional amendment to the public.
