The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set for another major expansion, with CAF confirming plans to increase the tournament from 24 to 28 teams.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe revealed that the continental showpiece will grow in size as part of broader reforms aimed at increasing inclusivity and developing football across Africa.
The expansion will see more than half of CAF’s 54 member associations gaining a chance to qualify for the tournament.
The competition’s last major expansion happened in 2019 when it was increased from 16 to 24 teams.
Motsepe said the decision is aimed at giving more nations an opportunity to compete on the biggest stage in African football, while also strengthening the global competitiveness of the tournament.
The CAF boss confirmed this at a press conference after an Exco meeting on Sunday.
