Police Arrest Former MP and 13 Others in Gweru
By A Correspondent | The Zimbabwe Republic Police on Saturday arrested former Chiundura constituency Member of Parliament, Livingston Chiminya, along with 13 others in Gweru. The group is currently being held at Gweru Central Police Station on allegations of convening an illegal gathering.
According to the detainees, the meeting was lawful and intended to discuss the Constitutional Amendment Bill 3 (CAB3). They argue that their gathering fell within the limits permitted under the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA), insisting they did not violate any legal thresholds.
Sources close to the matter claim the arrests reflect growing tensions around the proposed amendment, which seeks to extend the presidential term from five years to seven. Critics allege that the move is being pushed forward despite opposition, raising concerns about political freedoms and democratic processes.
The amendment is reportedly backed by a group of individuals commonly referred to as “Zvigananda,” a term often used to describe those accused of benefiting from or engaging in the looting of financial resources.
The incident adds to ongoing debate over governance and civil liberties, with observers closely watching how authorities respond to dissent surrounding the proposed constitutional changes.
