Warriors coach Marian Marinica speaks on squad rebuilding as he reveals main targets in his tenure

Warriors coach Marian Marinica has outlined his vision to rebuild the national team as Zimbabwe prepares for upcoming major tournaments.

The Romanian tactician revealed that the rebuilding process is part of a long-term plan, with an eye on future global competitions while maintaining competitiveness in the present.

“Every player I select, I select him for a reason. I take the best player at that point in time to represent the country,” he said.

“We do have a plan. We are looking towards the 2030 World Cup, and at the same time we have a rebuilding process to have a younger squad and make the best of the experienced players.

“We are looking at going through stages, and we are currently in one of these stages. AFCON 2027 is one of the big checking points, and we need to qualify for the tournament.”

Since his appointment late last year, Marinica has handed debut call-ups to a number of players including Tadiwa Chakuchichi, Panashe Makwiramiti, Mongameli Tshuma and goalkeeper Future Sibanda, while Shane Maroodza was recalled after being overlooked for the almost a year-and-half.
