RBZ To Unroll New ZiG Notes Next Tuesday

Tinashe Sambiri– The planned rollout of a new series of ZiG banknotes next week is already raising skepticism, with critics questioning whether the move will truly stabilise the troubled local currency or simply repeat past monetary failures.

Authorities claim the notes, set to begin circulating on April 7, will strengthen the currency and improve competitiveness against major global currencies.

However, such assurances have been met with caution in a country with a long history of currency instability and inflation shocks.

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Dr John Mushayavanhu recently announced the introduction of the new notes, presenting the move as a milestone in ongoing reforms. Yet, his remarks have done little to ease lingering concerns.

“We have the ZiG10 and ZiG20 notes in the system. We’re going to introduce new notes; they will circulate side by side,” said Dr Mushayavanhu.

“When that money comes to the banking system, banks are expected to take the old notes and bring them to the central bank.

We will destroy the old notes and give them value in new notes. So, it is going to be ZiG10, ZiG20 and ZiG50. The ZiG100 and ZiG200 notes will be introduced as and when the RBZ sees fit.”

Despite claims that the rollout will be “demand-driven and not inflationary,” critics argue that such assurances have been made before, often with disappointing outcomes.

The central bank insists that exchanging electronic balances for physical cash will not increase reserve money, but doubts remain over whether this approach can truly safeguard price stability.

Some economists have echoed the official line, pointing to single-digit inflation and tighter liquidity controls as signs of stability. However, others warn that these gains could be fragile, especially given Zimbabwe’s vulnerability to both internal policy missteps and external shocks.

Economic analyst Mr Titus Mukove expressed optimism, but his projections hinge heavily on continued discipline that many believe has been inconsistent in the past.
“The introduction of the new banknotes is expected to strengthen the ZiG’s position against the United States dollar, particularly in the context of global shocks and volatility,” he said.

“This optimism is anchored on the current macroeconomic stability, which includes single-digit inflation and a convergence between the parallel and official exchange rates.”
Mukove added that “the sustainability of this stability is highly likely,” though critics argue such confidence may be premature given the country’s track record.

He also defended the central bank’s strategy, saying: “This approach helps mitigate inflationary pressures, which is essential given the country’s history with inflation.”

Meanwhile, Monetary Policy Committee member Mr Persistence Gwanyanya painted an even rosier picture, claiming the rollout reflects growing confidence in the monetary system. However, observers say such claims risk glossing over persistent structural weaknesses.

“The introduction of higher denomination ZiG banknotes coincides with a period of pronounced macroeconomic stability,” he said.

“Renewed market confidence, underpinned by demonstrable credibility of the monetary authorities, is expected to support the acceptance of the upgraded ZiG notes.”

Gwanyanya further argued that “the authorities have demonstrated capacity to mitigate volatility through prudent monetary policy,” citing inflation of 4,4 percent year-on-year for March. Yet, critics point out that Zimbabwe’s economic history is littered with similar periods of apparent stability that quickly unravelled.

The rollout also comes at a time of heightened global uncertainty, including tensions in the Middle East, which could further expose the fragility of the local currency.

While officials continue to project confidence, many Zimbabweans remain wary, questioning whether the new banknotes represent genuine reform or just another chapter in a cycle of short-lived monetary experiments.
