Are You Using New ZiG Notes In Your Area ?

By A Correspondent – The rollout of the upgraded Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) notes has begun, but instead of inspiring confidence, the move is already raising fresh concerns among ordinary citizens and businesses wary of yet another currency experiment.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) announced that the new notes would start circulating this Tuesday, beginning with ZiG10, ZiG20, and ZiG50 denominations. Higher denominations of ZiG100 and ZiG200 are expected to follow in phases.

However, many Zimbabweans are approaching the development with skepticism, citing a long history of failed currency reforms that have eroded public trust.

Despite authorities presenting the rollout as a “key milestone” in stabilising the economy, critics argue that the introduction of new notes does little to address deeper structural problems.

“We’ve seen this before—new notes, new promises, same results,” said one Harare vendor. “People are tired of being told things will improve when nothing really changes.”

Early reports suggest that availability of the new ZiG notes is already limited, with some banks and businesses yet to receive sufficient supplies. This has created confusion in the market, as traders remain unsure whether to fully accept the currency or continue relying on more stable alternatives like the US dollar.

Economists have also warned that confidence—not just physical currency—is the real issue. Without strong backing, transparency, and consistent monetary policy, the new ZiG notes risk facing the same fate as previous currencies that quickly lost value.

Adding to the uncertainty is the phased rollout itself, which some say could worsen cash shortages in the short term. “If people can’t access the notes easily, it defeats the whole purpose,” another resident said. “It just becomes another system that doesn’t work for ordinary people.”

As the new ZiG notes enter circulation, the big question remains: will Zimbabweans embrace them, or will they become yet another symbol of economic instability? For now, doubt appears to be outweighing optimism.
