Form Six Learner “Steals” USD 3000 Cash From School Office

By A Correspondent -A 19-year-old Form Six learner from St James Zongoro High School in Mutasa has been taken to court after allegedly breaking into his school’s administration offices and stealing over US$3,000, which he later reportedly used to purchase a luxury vehicle.

The accused, Martin Chitembwe, appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate Mr Poterai Gwezhira facing charges of unlawful entry into premises and theft, as defined under Section 131 (2) (e) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23).

He denied the allegations and was remanded out of custody to April 26 for trial.

According to the prosecution led by Ms Joice Tinarwo, Chitembwe allegedly gained access to the administration block by deception, convincing the deputy head, Mrs Marian Masango, that he had been sent by Reverend Bezel Matikiti, and was therefore handed the office keys.

He is alleged to have used the keys to unlock both the main office and the clerk’s office, where he accessed a drawer containing US$3 202 and took the money without authorisation.

The court heard that the incident only came to light after police received information that the teenager had recently acquired a black Toyota Lexus, raising suspicion over the source of funds used in the purchase.

Investigations reportedly led to his arrest, after which he allegedly admitted to taking the money and using it to buy the vehicle.

“The matter came to light when police received a tip-off that the accused person had bought a black Toyota Lexus, Registration Number ACN0112, and arrested him. After interrogations, the accused confessed stealing the money from the clerk’s office and bought the motor vehicle,” said Ms Tinarwo.

Authorities managed to recover US$2,400 and also impounded the vehicle as investigations continue.
