Mixed Reactions Over Auxillia Mnangagwa’s Consolation Visit To Grieving Ronald Mujuru

Tinashe Sambiri– Zimbabweans have expressed mixed reactions following First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s recent “support” for Ronald Mujuru, who is mourning the tragic loss of his wife and five children in a horrific accident last week.

While the visit was framed as a gesture of compassion and national solidarity, some citizens have questioned the timing and sincerity of the intervention, accusing the First Lady of turning a deeply personal tragedy into a public spectacle.

Posting on X, Mrs Mnangagwa detailed her efforts to console the bereaved family, saying: “I brought together religious leaders from all faiths across the country to pray for Mr Ronald Mujuru and his family, as we continue to console him after the loss of his wife and five children.”

She added: “The leaders comforted him through prayer and the Word of God, while songs and dance were performed to lift his spirit.”

Emphasising unity and compassion, the First Lady said: “May our united prayers continue to bring comfort, strength, and hope. No one should face grief alone. I sincerely thank all faith leaders for their love and compassion.”

“Together, we stand with the Mujuru family, offering support and solidarity in their time of sorrow. May the departed souls rest in eternal peace,” she said.

However, reactions from members of the public suggest that not everyone welcomed the high-profile intervention.
One social media user, Chirize Chinendere, expressed discomfort with the approach, saying: “All I would want is to be left alone and certainly not have my grief used for posturing. It may have been better to check in after a couple of months. This for me is just too much.”

Another user, identified as Markoscene, questioned the spiritual aspect of the gathering, posting: “Which God were those churches you brought together praying to? I don’t think it was the true God — it was the devil.”

A third netizen criticised what they described as misplaced priorities, urging authorities to focus on preventative measures rather than symbolic gestures.

“Stop using this man’s tragedy as political mileage and be more proactive about ensuring our roads are safer otherwise you will be praying everyday.”

The debate highlights a broader tension between public displays of empathy by political figures and the expectations of citizens who often demand more substantive action, particularly in the wake of recurring road accidents.

As Ronald Mujuru continues to grieve his unimaginable loss, the public discourse surrounding the First Lady’s visit underscores the delicate balance between offering support and respecting personal mourning, especially when such gestures are carried out in the public eye.
