The inclement weather continues unabated in the Western Cape.
With a level six warning issued for Saturday, authorities are concerned about the high number of people displaced or affected by the storms.
At least a hundred thousand people require assistance and relief as efforts to drain water in homes, repair damaged electricity lines, fix broken roofs, and other infrastructure continues.
“This is really a huge humanitarian challenge that we are faced with, and there’s also more bad weather on the way,” said provincial Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning spokesperson, Wouter Kriel.
Severe storms have battered large parts of the province, leaving homes underwater and infrastructure damaged.
Among the buildings affected are schools.
With a state of disaster now officially declared, the Western Cape Education Department says close to 300 schools have reported damage.
Over 120 schools require urgent attention.
“The Western Cape Education Department’s infrastructure team is working hard to address each query as fast as possible,” said provincial education department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond.
“The continued rain and winds have not assisted matters.”
