Kenya has formally submitted former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s application for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship. The submission was made by Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Odinga’s application outlines his vision for the AUC, focusing on African integration, economic transformation, trade enhancement, and gender equity. His candidacy has been supported by the Kenyan government, which aims to ensure his success in the bid. Odinga’s credentials include his experience as the AUC Chairperson’s High Representative on Infrastructure. Other candidates for the position include Djiboutian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Somalia’s former Foreign Minister Fawzia Yusuf Adam, and former Seychellois Vice President Vincent Meriton. The AUC election process includes vetting by a panel of experts and a live televised debate. The election is set for February 2025, with the new chairperson to be elected by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
