Nigerians Commence 10-day Protests Against High Cost of Living

Hundreds of Nigerians have taken to the streets across several cities to protest the rising cost of living in the country. The protests, tagged #EndbadGovernanceinNigeria, are set to continue for ten days. The movement gained support online among Nigerians who are struggling with 40% food inflation and tripled fuel prices following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms last year. To forestall the protest, the government announced measures like grain distribution and aid for the needy. However, the protest organizers continued, presenting the government with 19 demands, including an end to human rights abuses. At the center of their grievances is the removal of a state subsidy on petroleum products, which led to higher fuel prices. Meanwhile, citizens are stocking up on essentials, fearing escalating violence.
