EFF Advocates For Higher Education Requirements For Western Cape Government Officials

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Western Cape are set to propose a legislative change that would require high-ranking government officials to hold tertiary education degrees. Aishah Cassiem, a member of the Provincial Legislature, announced the initiative during a recent debate on Premier Alan Winde’s address at the opening of Parliament.

Cassiem critiqued Winde’s administration, suggesting that his and his cabinet’s lack of educational qualifications might contribute to their disconnection from the real issues faced by residents.

The announcement follows ongoing criticisms by the EFF towards members of the Democratic Alliance (DA), including its leader John Steenhuisen, regarding their educational backgrounds. The proposed motion by the EFF aims to mandate post-matric qualifications for ministers, premiers, speakers, and MECs, arguing that a lack of educational diversity and depth among current leaders impedes their effectiveness.

Cassiem is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree at the University of South Africa (UNISA) and holds qualifications in office administration from Damelin and journalism from City Varsity. Prior to her role in the legislature, she was actively involved in local governance as a councillor in the City of Cape Town.
