Mandisa Maya’s Appointment: A New Dawn for Fighting Corruption

Incoming Chief Justice Mandisa Maya’s appointment is sparking optimism for the swift resolution of major corruption cases and the recovery of billions in taxpayer funds. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent announcement names Maya as the successor to Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, with Maya set to assume office on September 1st.

In an interview with Eyewitness News, Justice Minister Thembi Simelane hailed Maya’s appointment as historic and “exciting,” noting it’s the first time a woman will hold the position. Simelane expressed hopes that Maya will streamline the prosecution process for grand corruption cases, enabling the state to recover significant amounts of looted funds.

Simelane is optimistic that Maya will facilitate a more efficient collaboration between the Special Tribunal and the High Court. The State is also intensifying efforts to extradite the Gupta brothers, despite a previous setback with the UAE. “We are determined to pursue this vigorously,” Simelane affirmed, calling for further support from both the President and the King to strengthen their case.
