Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), reiterated his criticism of the African National Congress (ANC), rejecting the notion of a coalition with the Democratic Alliance (DA) or Freedom Front Plus (FF) in the Government of National Unity (GNU). Speaking at Rhodes University, Malema conveyed to the students that the ANC, EFF, and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party share a common lineage, yet they remain distinct from the ANC-led GNU, which encompasses nine parties including the DA and FF Plus.
The EFF and the MK Party, deriving from the same liberation movement as the ANC, have opted out of the current government coalition. During his lecture, Malema addressed accusations regarding the EFF’s stance in coalition negotiations, maintaining their integrity and dismissing claims of irrational demands.
“When people have sold out, they will say all kinds of things they want to say, but it’s not true. We’ve never made unreasonable demands. One of the reasonable demands we made in 2016 was that Zuma must resign as a president before we give the ANC our votes – they refused. In this year’s negotiations, we said we are not even asking for your president to resign,” Malema explained.
