Nigeria Arrests Polish Academics Over Alleged Russian Flag Display

Nigerian security forces have arrested six Polish students and a lecturer for allegedly displaying Russian flags during protests against economic hardship. According to the authorities, the arrests occurred in Kano state. Peter Afunanya, a spokesman for Nigeria’s secret service, stated that the Polish nationals were detained because of their location during the protests and their alleged display of foreign flags. He did not reveal whether the Poles participated in the protests. The University of Warsaw confirmed the detainees were on a study trip organized by the institution. According to the Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Szejna, the arrests are a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He claimed that the students were not carrying flags but might have been taking photos, which was interpreted as such.
