The South African government has announced its commitment to actively push for the renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) as its expiration approaches. The act, established in 2000, allows eligible African nations to export their goods to the United States tax-free.
The current legislation is scheduled to expire in September 2025, and there has been no confirmation of an extension from US lawmakers as of yet.
Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, emphasized the strong bilateral relations between South Africa and the US, underscoring the importance of AGOA for both parties. “South Africa continues to advance a case for the renewal of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, which expires in 14 months, and supports calls by African trade ministers for the US government to do away with the annual reviews of AGOA.”
The push for renewal has reportedly received strong bipartisan support from members of the US Congress, reflecting a positive outlook for the continuation of the agreement.
