President Emmerson Mnangagwa Awards Heroic Truck Driver Sirizani Butau With Gold Cross of Zimbabwe 

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has awarded Sirizani Butau a Gold Cross of Zimbabwe for saving eight people from a burning Beta bus at an accident scene in Mutare in December 2021.

Sirizani Butau, the heroic truck driver was presented the award by the President during the Heroes Day commemorations held at the National Heroes Acre in Harare today.

Heroic Act: Butau Rescues Eight from Burning Bus After Horrific Collision

Sirizani Butau, became a hero when he saved eight people from a burning bus after a devastating accident 20 km outside of Mutare on the Mutare-Harare highway.

The accident occurred when a Beta bus collided with a fuel tanker haulage truck, causing the bus to burst into flames.

Despite not being involved in the accident, Butau quickly sprang into action. He rushed to pull several passengers from the inferno.

His bravery came at a cost—Butau sustained severe burns on his hands and legs during the rescue and spent his Christmas in the hospital.

In recognition of his courage and selfless sacrifice, President Emmerson Mnangagwa awarded Butau the Gold Cross of Zimbabwe.

Courageous Siblings Awarded for Rescuing Their Mother from Crocodile Attack

President Mnangagwa also awarded the Silver Cross of Zimbabwe to Peace Magaya, 12, and Luckmore Magaya, 9.

This honor comes as a recognition of their bravery in saving their mother from a crocodile attack in Mhondoro earlier this year.

The President has commended them for their courageous act.

President Mnangagwa Previously Rewarded Brave Siblings with Scholarships and Financial Support

This follows President Mnangagwa’s initial recognition of the two courageous siblings in March 2024.

Moved by their bravery, he awarded Peace and Luckmore Magaya scholarships and gave them US$5,000 each.

President Mnangagwa personally met the siblings and pledged to cover their education expenses.

“Today I met two brave young heroes, Peace and Luckmore Magaya, from Mhondoro. They saved their mother from a crocodile attack. Inspired by their courage, I’ve taken on their education fees and awarded them $5,000 each. Let’s nurture such bravery and compassion in our youth,” President Mnangagwa announced on X (formerly Twitter).
