Ethiopia Extends Ban on Fossil Fuel Car Imports to Diplomatic Missions

Ethiopia has banned the importation of petrol and diesel vehicles by diplomatic missions and international organizations as part of its clean energy transition. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, only electric vehicles (EVs) will be permitted, aligning with the country’s strategy to combat climate change and enhance environmental sustainability. The government had earlier banned the importation of fossil-fuel cars by the general public. However, this move ensures the ban also applies to diplomatic missions and international organizations. With the ban, the Ethiopian government aims to capitalize on its abundant hydropower resources, which generate 96% of the nation’s electricity, and reduce the strain placed on its finances by fuel importation. However, only 40% of the population currently has access to electricity, underscoring the need for improved infrastructure, including EV charging stations.
