Sudan is grappling with a severe cholera outbreak, with over 350 cases and at least 22 deaths reported in recent weeks. The cholera surge is largely attributed to heavy rains contaminating water supplies with sewage, compounding the effects of damaged infrastructure and widespread displacement. Since June, floods have displaced over 20,000 people across 11 states, worsening the spread of the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that most affected individuals were unvaccinated, and efforts are underway to implement a vaccination campaign. This outbreak comes amid the ongoing civil war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis and hindered the provision of essential services. Alongside the flooding, the conflict has created an ideal environment for rapid transmission, making it challenging to control the outbreak and address other rising diseases like dengue fever and meningitis.
