Ex Poacher Leads Conservation Efforts in Zimbabwean Communities

In Chiredzi, southeastern Zimbabwe, a former poacher named Tembanechako is attempting to transform his community’s attitude toward wildlife conservation. Once driven to poaching by recurring droughts that made farming unviable, Tembanechako’s outlook changed after a stint in prison, where a program aimed at converting poachers into conservationists influenced him. During his time in prison, he learned new skills, including carpentry, which he now uses to support his family. Furthermore, he advocates against poaching, educating fellow villagers on the broader benefits of wildlife conservation. Despite the challenges, including human-animal conflicts due to drought and habitat encroachment, Tembanechako’s efforts are making a noticeable impact in reducing poaching in his community.
