Parliament is gearing up for a demanding week as it welcomes the executive for the first time since the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU). President Cyril Ramaphosa, along with key ministers from the justice and security cluster, will appear in the House to answer oral questions.
The week kicks off on Tuesday with the Auditor-General presenting a report on the financial health of the country’s municipalities. Parliament’s portfolio committees will focus on new legislation and the annual performance plans from government departments and entities.
On Wednesday, ministers of justice, police, correctional services, and home affairs will face MPs’ questions. This marks the first time non-ANC ministers will be on the other side of the podium. Key issues on the agenda include state capture prosecutions, viral prison videos, kidnapping cases, and security threats.
Ramaphosa is expected in Parliament on Thursday, before heading to Zimbabwe for an agricultural show. This will be his first Q&A session since being sworn in for a second term. He’ll address questions on a sovereign wealth fund, private investment in logistics, and foreign policy.
Opposition parties are expected to express frustration over space constraints, as some members will need to join via a virtual platform. A dome tent for plenary sittings, currently under construction, won’t be ready until October.
