Stats SA Report Highlights Growing Distrust in Police

South Africans’ lack of confidence in the police remains high, as revealed in Statistics South Africa’s (Stats SA) 2023/24 Victims of Crime report, which was released on Tuesday. The report found that less than half of the 30,000 surveyed households reported housebreakings to the South African Police Service.

According to the report, an estimated 1.5 million housebreaking incidents took place across South Africa during the 2023/24 period, affecting around 1.1 million households. Despite the high prevalence, only 44.1% of those affected reported some or all of the incidents to the police.

“About 44.1% of households that experienced housebreaking reported some or all incidences to the police,” explained Stats SA’s Boitumelo Mooketsi.

House robberies, another common crime, saw a slightly higher reporting rate, with 58% of victims contacting the authorities. The report noted that house robberies rank as the second most frequent crime affecting South African households, with 209,000 households falling victim in 2023/24.

The majority of the respondents in the sample size expressed dissatisfaction with the police, believing them to be inefficient. This growing distrust continues to reflect the challenges faced by law enforcement in gaining the public’s confidence.
