“This Is Personal”: Starlink Executive Shares License Experience With The Zimbabwe Officials

An executive at SpaceX company Starlink has shared their experience getting the Internet service licensed by the Zimbabwe officials.

Ryan is the Senior Director of Global Licensing and Market Activation at SpaceX, the America aerospace company that owns Starlink. The satellite internet constellation became available in Zimbabwe over the weekend and people can now order kits directly from the United States with no intermediaries.

After Starlink officially confirmed that it was now live in Zimbabwe, Ryan commented and shared a glimpse of what happened behind the scenes:

“This country launch is personal for me. Great effort by my team to persevere through a difficult and complex licensing and activation effort! Welcome to the Starlink family Zimbabwe!”

Yesterday, journalist Hopewell Chin’ono said a source from Starlink Africa and Middle East told him that the company rejected a proposal for a 50% stake, with Wicknell Chivayo’s IMC pocketing a cool 40% and while the questionable Mutapa Investment Fund would keep the other 10%.

“My Starlink source told me this morning that they rejected the deal because the other parties were not bringing anything to the table except political capital,” he added.

Starlink eventually reached an agreement with the Zimbabwean authorities. DHL, a law firm representing Starlink, the secret service, the defence ministry, and ZIMRA met last week to discuss the internet service.

“Starlink was supposed to dispatch the first 1,500 test kits from America to Harare this week, but they were informed that POTRAZ needed to sign off first, which has now been done. POTRAZ will also inspect and verify the kits upon their arrival in Harare,” Chin’ono added.
