The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has announced the closure of the M1 South due to a fatal accident on Monday at the Houghton Drive exit in Houghton Estate. The collision, involving two vehicles, has led to the complete shutdown of all southbound lanes.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla stated that officers are on-site to manage the situation and direct traffic. The exact number of fatalities is yet to be confirmed. Motorists traveling southbound towards Central Johannesburg are strongly advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Recommended detours include Central and West Streets in Houghton Estate and Oxford Road.
