The National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says police officers should not fold their arms when they are under attack from criminals.
Masemola was speaking in the Mthatha CBD, in the Eastern Cape, on Sunday.
He was giving an update on the work done by the South African Police Service (SAPS) since August’s deployment of extra resources to fight extortion-related crimes in the area.
Masemola said communities should be worried by the underreporting of extortion-related incidents in Eastern Cape.
According to Masemola, the number of reported extortion cases does not reflect the severity of the problem.
He said since the establishment of the extortion landline in the province in August, only 36 anonymous extortion-related calls have been received.
“Since our visit throughout the OR Tambo District, a hundred dangerous weapons have been seized, including 18 firearms and 99 rounds of ammunition.”
