Candlelight vigil to send well wishes to ex-Minister Pravin Gordhan

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and Defend our Democracy are holding a candlelight vigil at Constitutional Hill on Wednesday evening to show their support to former public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan.

Gordhan’s family announced earlier this week that he has been hospitalized with an undisclosed illness.

Gordhan retired from politics at the end of the 6th administration earlier this year saying that he wants to focus on his health.

Braving Johannesburg’s windy and chilly weather, close friends and supporters of Gordhan gathered to extend their get-well-soon wishes to the former minister.

Most are describing him as a freedom and corruption fighter, who they say played a significant role in stabilizing governance in South Africa.

Gordhan’s friend and fellow activist, Alf Karrim said that the former minister was one who imparted hope to South Africans even during turbulent times.

“The message I want to pass to Pravin on behalf all of us and we hope thing go well. We hope that he feels better.”

He said that although he is unsure of the condition Gordhan is suffering from, all he can do is hope he lives long enough to continue seeing the fruits of his labour.
