A 21-year-old man has been convicted of murdering his friend who grabbed the nyash of a thigh vendor he had hired for the night.
The High Court’s Justice Munamato Mutevedzi found Passwell Chiwaura guilty of killing Takudzwa Kavhuru, 21, after a year-long pretrial detention. The sentencing date has not yet been set.

Man Convicted For Murdering His Friend Over A Thigh Vendor He Had Hired
H-Metro reported that the incident took place last year at Matomati Bar, where Chiwaura, Kavhuru, and two hired companions, Joyce Gwese and Patience Gezi, had gathered for a night of drinking.
Tensions flared when Kavhuru allegedly touched Gezi, whom Chiwaura had chosen for the night. Gwese reportedly reprimanded Kavhuru, sparking a confrontation between him and Chiwaura.
According to the prosecution, Chiwaura overheard the exchange and confronted Kavhuru. A scuffle broke out, during which Chiwaura grabbed a broken beer bottle and stabbed Kavhuru in the stomach, causing severe injuries. Kavhuru’s intestines were exposed, and he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.
The Trial
During the trial, Chiwaura denied intending to kill his friend. His defence claimed that he mistook Kavhuru for an attacker amid a perceived threat from a gang, asserting that he acted in self-defence. However, Justice Mutevedzi dismissed this defence, stating that Chiwaura’s actions did not align with self-defence claims.
“It is for the same reason that this aspect of the accused’s defence remained tepid. It was not seriously argued. We dismiss it like we dismissed the accused’s argument of self-defence.
“In the circumstances, we are convinced that the State managed to prove beyond reasonable doubt as required by law, that the accused is guilty of the murder of the deceased. Accordingly, the accused is found guilty of murder as charged.”
Chiwaura has remained in custody for 14 months. His sentencing will follow at a later date, with the court set to weigh the severity of the fatal incident.
