ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera Explains Her Dr Title After Social Media Melee

Minister of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, has explained her Dr title after Fadzayi Mahere questioned her credentials.

Yesterday, Mahere asked why Tatenda Mavetera refers to herself as a Doctor when she is still reading for her PhD.

The Questions To The Minister

Minister Mavetera has been in the spotlight after her announcement last week that WhatsApp administrators in business groups will be required to pay a data protection fee, ranging from US$50 to US$2,500.

As the melee ensued, former CCC spokesperson and legislator Fadzayi Mahere questioned Tatenda Mavetera’s qualifications days ago. This was after some people online compared her credentials to those of Rwanda’s ICT minister.

Mavetera revealed:

“If you want to know my qualifications. Here they are:
1. BSc Honours in Management and Marketing WUA
2. Masters in Strategic Marketing MSU
3. Masters in Development studies WUA
4. PHD candidate in Doctorate in Business Leadership majoring in Digital Marketing and Information Systems MSU
5. Diploma in Shipping, courier and forwarding.”

Yesterday, Fadzayi Mahere then took the issue a notch further and asked why Mavetera is referred to as a Doctor when she disclosed that she has yet to attain a PhD.

Mahere inquired:

Good day, Honourable Minister @TateMavetera,

1. Why do you use the title “DR”, yet according to your tweet on the 9th of November, you indicated that, in terms of qualifications, you’re still just a PhD candidate?

2. Can a PhD candidate use the title “DR”?

The ICT Minister took note of the question and replied:

“Thank you for asking. I was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters in 2022. It is not part of my academic qualifications but an award, which is why I did not mention it on that post you have highlighted.”
