Transport Minister to Launch Festive Season Road Safety Campaign

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy will launch the 2024 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign in Tshwane on Sunday, coinciding with World Remembrance Day.

The campaign comes as South Africa braces for heightened travel activity from December to early February, a period historically marked by increased road accidents. Running from December to mid-January, the initiative aims to reduce fatalities through targeted measures against drunk driving, improving pedestrian safety, and enhancing law enforcement on high-risk routes.

Authorities plan to intensify operations, focusing on major highways and residential areas as traffic volumes surge during the holidays.

The event will also serve as a tribute to the 69 traffic officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and commemorate others who perished on the country’s roads.

Creecy will be joined by provincial transport MECs, law enforcement officials, and families in honouring these sacrifices and pledging renewed commitment to road safety.
