South Africa Reaffirms Solidarity with Palestine at G20 Summit

South Africa’s International Relations Minister, Ronald Lamola, reiterated the country’s unwavering support for Palestine during the G20 Social Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Lamola highlighted South Africa’s historical struggle against apartheid, emphasizing the critical role of international solidarity, including Brazil’s support. Drawing from this history, he called for decisive action in the Middle East, advocating for Palestinian self-determination and an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza and Palestine.

“We call for accountability for the state of Israel and the de-escalation of the ongoing conflict. South Africa stands with the people of Palestine and urges the international community to do the same,” Lamola declared.

He praised Brazil’s efforts to involve civil society during its G20 presidency and pledged to expand this initiative when South Africa assumes the presidency next month. Lamola extended an invitation to global leaders, announcing plans for social movement engagement meetings in South Africa.

Concluding his address, Lamola reaffirmed South Africa’s position: “Free, free Palestine.”

This speech reinforces South Africa’s commitment to championing global justice and amplifying marginalized voices.
