The City of Johannesburg has clarified that the registration process for spaza shops has not yet commenced, following confusion at the Jabulani Civic Centre in Soweto on Monday.
Dozens of foreign nationals arrived at the center, mistakenly believing the registration process had begun. This comes in the wake of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s directive requiring all spaza shops and food-handling facilities to register with local municipalities within 21 days, starting from last Friday.
“There was confusion yesterday in Jabulani. People thought registration was taking place, but no registration is currently happening there,” said City of Johannesburg spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane. “The city is in the process of establishing registration points, which will be communicated to all stakeholders once finalized.”
Modingoane added that a workshop is scheduled for Wednesday to prepare municipal officials for the registration process.
“The workshop will ensure that officials are fully briefed on the presidential declaration and understand the steps required for implementation on the ground,” he said.
The city urged residents and business owners to await further announcements regarding the official registration points and process.
