Political parties in South Africa have offered varied reactions to the announcement of US Ambassador Reuben Brigety’s resignation. Brigety revealed on Monday that he will step down on January 10, 2025, citing standard protocol following the recent US elections and the impending change in presidential administration.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) welcomed the resignation, while African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula called it “good news” in a social media post.
Brigety’s time as ambassador, which began in 2022, has been fraught with controversy, most notably his unfounded allegations that South Africa had supplied weapons to Russia via the Lady R vessel. The accusations led to strained diplomatic relations, economic repercussions, and reputational harm for South Africa.
In a brief statement, the EFF criticized Brigety’s tenure, accusing him of “arrogance and imperialist interference” that damaged the country’s image and contributed to the rand’s decline.
While the ANC has yet to release an official statement, Mbalula’s online remarks suggest the party views the resignation as a positive development.
Brigety has also highlighted progress in US-South Africa relations during his tenure, despite the controversies. His resignation comes just days before Donald Trump is set to be inaugurated as the next US president.
This development closes a contentious chapter in diplomatic ties between the two nations, with political leaders reflecting divergent opinions on his legacy.
