Gilbert Mufandaedza (27), a resident of Jenya Farm in Karoi, appeared before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court to face bribery charges. According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA), the incident occurred on October 12, 2024.

On the day in question, a police officer in Karoi noticed an unregistered motorcycle belonging to Kennedy Chirongoma. The officer apprehended Chirongoma for failing to register his vehicle. In an attempt to secure his neighbor’s release, Mufandaedza approached the officer and offered a bribe of US$5.

The police officer, demonstrating vigilance, recorded the serial number of the US$5 bill before arresting Mufandaedza for bribery.

Sentencing Details

Mufandaedza was sentenced to six months in prison. However, three months of the sentence were suspended for five years on the condition that he does not commit a similar offense. The remaining three months were further suspended, provided he completes 105 hours of community service.

CID Officers Arrested For Bribery

Meanwhile, in a separate case, two Central Investigations Department (CID) officers, Tofarasei Chipindu (33) and Japhet Matahwa (34), were arrested in April 2024 for bribery. They appeared before the Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court facing bribery charges. The officers are accused of using their positions to obstruct justice in a theft investigation.

According to reports, on February 8, 2024, the accused summoned Laston Changamire to the CID Triangle offices, informing him that he and Tawanda Changamire were implicated in a theft case. The officers allegedly claimed the duo had received USD$150 each from stolen funds.

The CID officers reportedly demanded a bribe of USD$150 from both Laston and Tawanda Changamire to avoid being prosecuted alongside Justin Saizi, another individual implicated in the investigation. The Changamires were allegedly coerced into providing the bribe.

The incident came to light through a whistleblower, prompting an investigation by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission. This resulted in the police officers’ arrests.
