The ANC Women’s League is calling on Eskom to extend the deadline for prepaid electricity customers to upgrade their meters, citing insufficient time and limited public awareness.
Currently, prepaid customers have until Sunday to complete the upgrade. While the deadline for “zero buyers” — individuals with active meters but no recent electricity purchases due to illegal connections or alternative power sources — was extended, no similar concession has been made for prepaid users.
Eskom reports over 5.2 million successful upgrades as of Saturday night. However, thousands of residents continue to wait in long queues, hoping to meet the deadline and avoid penalty fees.
Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has dismissed the possibility of an extension, citing technical constraints. Yet, the ANC Women’s League argues that many customers, especially those without internet access, were unaware of the deadline despite Eskom’s reported awareness campaign.
The league is urging Eskom to reconsider, emphasizing the need for fair access and additional time for residents to comply with the upgrade requirements.
