The case involves a 17-year-old mother and her parent. Together, they orchestrated the sale of a newborn baby for a mere US$180, revealing the sinister operations within the shadowy underworld of human trafficking.
While the baby’s mother’s have been partially protected, it was disclosed that the teenage mother operated under the alias “Nobuhle Sibanda.” Her mother, identified as Evelyn Zisengwe, played a pivotal role in the conspiracy.
The Chain of Events That Led To The Arrest
According to H-Metro, in early January 2024, the duo devised a plan to sell Nobuhle’s nine-month-old unborn baby. They collaborated with Dion Tore, an individual allegedly entrenched in the illegal adoption network, whom they encountered through a WhatsApp group known as Sora ne Miti.
During their conversations, Zisengwe revealed her daughter’s pregnancy and the intention to terminate it. Tore, who reportedly had long struggled with infertility, persuaded the family to give her the child instead. This sinister arrangement would eventually lead to the exploitation of a vulnerable newborn.

On February 25, 2024, Nobuhle delivered the baby prematurely. A week later, on March 5, Tore took custody of the newborn at Harare Hospital. To cover her tracks, Tore falsified a death certificate, claiming the baby had passed away. This forged document effectively erased the child’s existence from official records, allowing her to disappear into the illegal adoption underworld.

A Monetary Exchange and a Tip-Off
Between May and August 2024, Tore sent payments amounting to US$180 to Zisengwe via the Ecocash platform. The plot unravelled when law enforcement authorities in Murehwa received a tip-off. Acting on the information, they launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of Zisengwe, Sibanda, and Tore. All three suspects have since appeared in court to face charges related to human trafficking and illegal adoption practices.
