Harare Slay Queen Loses S*x Case
By Showbiz Reporter-Hip-hop artist and socialite Christabel Stembeni Mahlungwa, popularly known as Kikky Badass, has been ordered to pay $18,000 in damages to prominent Masvingo lawyer Rodney Saratoga Makausi.
High Court Judge Sunsley Zisengwe gave the ruling after Kikky defamed Makausi in a controversial Instagram post in March 2023.
The post, shared with Kikky’s 235,000 followers, accused Makausi of soliciting sex from her.
Makausi, who is also a businessman and devout Seventh-Day Adventist, claimed the allegations caused severe damage to his reputation, both personally and professionally.
Initially demanding $500,000 in damages, Makausi revised the claim to $60,000.
The court ultimately awarded him $18,000 after Kikky failed to file her Pre-Trial Conference (PTC) submissions and missed the PTC hearing on October 1, 2024.
This prompted Makausi to apply for a default judgment.
Makausi testified that Kikky ignored repeated requests to retract the defamatory post, leaving him subject to widespread embarrassment and ridicule. “As a devout Christian, professional man, and officer of the court, my reputation and character are my currency,” Makausi told the court.
He argued that the false allegations caused irreparable harm in Masvingo, a closely-knit community.
Kikky, known for her bold personality and a controversial presence in Zimbabwe’s entertainment scene, had previously requested the case be dismissed, arguing that damages in U.S. dollars were unlawful as the currency is not officially recognized. Justice Zisengwe dismissed her plea.
Kikky’s rise to fame includes roles as a video vixen in music videos and her unapologetic advocacy for body confidence and self-expression.
However, she has also been a polarizing figure, often attracting public scrutiny for her provocative online persona.
Represented by Samuel Banda of Advocate’s Chambers in Harare, Makausi’s victory underscores the legal repercussions of defamatory social media content, especially when it affects individuals’ professional standing and personal lives.
This ruling serves as a cautionary tale about the potential cost of reckless social media posts in Zimbabwe’s increasingly litigious environment.
