Mpofu, Chimombe To Spend Christmas In Jail

By A Correspondent

Harare businessmen Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe will spend Christmas in jail after their application for referral to the Constitutional Court was dismissed.

The two were arrested in connection with an alleged US$7 million fraud related to a controversial goat contract with the Government.

The pair’s trial has been scheduled for February 10, 2025, meaning they will remain in custody until then.

Their legal team had sought to challenge their detention, but the court refused to grant their application, leaving them without bail.

The contract, which was initially meant to boost livestock farming in the country, has come under scrutiny due to claims of financial mismanagement and fraudulent activities.

Both businessmen have denied the charges, asserting that the contract was legitimate and all procedures were followed.

However, the ongoing investigation and trial process have raised concerns about corruption and transparency in government dealings, particularly in public procurement.
