International football set to return to Zimbabwe

CAF has approved the use of the National Sports Stadium, paving the way for the return of international football to the country.

Zimbabwe last hosted an international match over four years ago, after all local venues were condemned by CAF.

Renovations have been ongoing at the National Sports Stadium in Harare, and the ground has now been granted special approval to host Category 2 international games.

This means the stadium will be eligible for preliminary round matches in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, as well as U23, U20, and U17 Afcon qualifiers.

The approval allows Simba Bhora to use the facility when they face Nsingizi Hotspurs in September. However, CAF has not yet cleared the venue for the senior men and women’s national team fixtures.

The Warriors will have to wait before playing at the stadium, as the renovations have not yet met the required standards. The national team will instead use Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg for their upcoming home matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
