Head-hunting works best, Marshall Gore tells ZIFA to recruit smarter

UK-based ZIFA Global and diaspora initiative Chairperson, Marshal Gore has urged the association to rethink its approach to hiring the next Warriors coach.

This comes after ZIFA’s recent announcement inviting applications for the national team post after parting ways with former coach Michael Nees.

Gore took to facebook to share his thoughts on the issue, In his analysis, Gore believes that asking coaches to apply for the Warriors job may not yield the best candidates, pointing out that top coaches are rarely secured through open adverts.

He, however made it clear that his suggestions were not intended as criticism of ZIFA leadership but rather as constructive input to help the association attract a coach who aligns with Zimbabwe’s football ambitions and development goals.

Below is was Gore said

The challenges of asking coaches to apply for the national team job are many.

Top coaches don’t usually apply in newspapers. The best are usually headhunted, they don’t chase adverts, they are approached through networks and agents.

Top qualifications don’t always mean competence. Some coaches look great on paper but lack experience, leadership, or the ability to handle national team pressure.

Posting the job only on local media or ZIFA platforms won’t attract coaches based in Europe, the Americas, or Asia who could add real value. I agree using www.jobsfifa.com gives application some global visibility.

Head-hunting works best, the right approach is to identify the best person who fits your vision and talk to them directly not just read about them.

In football, the best practice is to find a replacement before firing the incumbent. It avoids chaos, media drama, and keeps the team focused.

This is not a criticism of my colleagues on the ZIFA Board, my analysis and recommendations simply offer an alternative perspective.

I truly hope the current application process attracts the right coach who aligns with our national football ambitions.
